He started his football career with Selangor FA in 1980 at the age of 18 where he made his international debut in the Merdeka Tournament against Indonesia.
Zainal played along with Malaysian legendary striker the late Mokhtar Dahari, R Arumugam, Soh Chin Aun, and other recognized faces in Malaysian football. He’s famously known for being the Malaysia football team striker back in the 1980s and 1990s.

After he retired from active football in 1999, he was selected to coach the Malaysian youth in 2001, and in 2002, he was selected to be the assistant coach for Malaysia’s senior team.
Zainal also coached Malaysia Super League side, Panang FA, and won them their first Malaysia Super League title as well as the Malaysian FA Cup in 2006. After his contract expired, he was unveiled as the new head coach of Melaka United. After two years with Melaka, he returned to coach Penang again for the 2022 season.
In January 2023, Zainal Abidin Hassan made major headlines when Malaysian singer Fyna Jebat, disclosed that, she’s now married to the former national football team striker. However, Zainal, 61 is yet to confirm his marriage to Fyna, 29.
