In 2016, Mr. Motamed, who had served as CNA’s chairman and CEO since 2009, announced his retirement.

He joined the board of American International Group Inc. in 2019, following his retirement from CNA, but resigned in January due to health issues.

Mr. Motamed, who worked in the insurance sector for 45 years, started his career with Chubb Corp. in 1977 as a trainee in claims. Before departing to accept the top position at CNA, he advanced to become vice chairman and chief operating officer.

According to a spokesman, CNA will donate money to cancer research in Mr. Motamed’s memory.

In a statement, CNA said: “Tom’s inspired and committed leadership during a remarkable 45-year career has benefited the insurance business in innumerable ways. Tom is going to be sorely missed.

Mr. Motamed was “steady presence during a critical part of AIG’s turnaround and transformation,” according to a statement from Peter Zaffino, chairman and CEO of the insurer. “Through his dedication to the agents, brokers, clients, and other partners who benefited from his insights, expertise, and judgment, Tom made a lasting impression on the insurance industry.”
