She was born on November 23, 1955, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and is the senior United States Senator representing the state of Louisiana. Landrieu is a Democrat and is the state’s senior member of the Senate. Landrieu was born in Arlington, Virginia, but grew up in the Louisiana city of New Orleans. The former New Orleans mayor and Secretary of the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development, Moon Landrieu, is her mother, and her brother, Mitch Landrieu, the current Mayor of New Orleans and former Lieutenant Governor of Louisiana, is her brother-in-law. Her bachelor degree was awarded to her by Louisiana State University, which is located in Baton Rouge. After many years in the real estate industry, she was elected to the state legislature as a state representative (1980–1988) and then as state treasurer (1988–1996). She was elected to the United States Senate in a tight battle in 1996, and she was re-elected by increasing margins in difficult campaigns in 2002 and 2008.
Landrieu is one of the most conservative Democrats in the Senate, and she has been known to take stances that are diametrically opposed to those of her party. She first gained national notoriety in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when she openly questioned the federal government’s response to the natural catastrophe. In 2005, she was a co-sponsor of a Senate resolution in which the United States Senate expressed regret for the failure to pass anti-lynching legislation in the early twentieth century. During the drafting of the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, she played a critical role in ensuring that extra concessions were made to preserve Louisiana’s Medicaid system before agreeing to endorse it as an option. In 2011, she was appointed as a cardinal (vice-chair) of the Senate’s Appropriations Subcommittee on Homeland Security Appropriations. The Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship was led by Sen. Feinstein from 2009 to 2014, and she is presently the chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.
