Katie Holmes Just Wore the Cool-Girl Sneakers That Are Always Sold Out

Everyone needs a few wardrobe staples that can live in their closet year-round, like a timeless pair of jeans or the perfect white T-shirt that looks just as good with cut-offs in the summer as it does with a crewneck sweater in the winter. Personally, I have those around-the-clock basics secured, but where I tend to struggle is in the shoe department —  my taste leans, unfortunately, very seasonal, which can make things hard. I live in sandals in summer and gravitate toward anything with fur-lining in winter, leaving me in need of a shoe I can wear 365 days a year. The good news? Katie Holmes just proved her go-to summer sneaker is just as cool in winter — so yes, I’m fully planning to steal them.

This week, the actress stepped out in New York City to celebrate her 45th birthday with a good old-fashioned birthday shopping trip (a girl after my own heart!), and her look has quickly become the inspiration for my everyday winter uniform. Her base was simple but chic, opting for classic straight-leg blue jeans and an oversized black jacket that she accessorized with sunnies, a white beanie, and a plaid scarf that brought serious color to the look. But, most importantly, she finished the outfit with the almost always-sold-out black Adidas sneakers she’s been wearing all year long.

The entire look had that effortless vibe, but was clearly well thought out. Holmes is the queen of wide-leg pants, so seeing her rock a straight-leg style surprised me until I realized how well it balanced out all the other oversized elements of her look. Baggy jeans might have been summer and fall’s hottest style, but, as she proved, a classic straight-leg is your oversized winter sweater’s best friend. But really, what struck me most about this outfit was just how chic her Adidas Sambas made it look. The skate-inspired sneakers added a cool-girl touch to an otherwise classic cold-day outfit.

If we’re talking top year-round, cross-generational shoes of 2023, Sambas need to be on the list. The style has been worn over and over again by stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Olivia Wilde, Kaia Gerber, and Olivia Rodrigo. And it makes sense that Gen Z’s favorite shoe has mass appeal; it goes with literally everything. Holmes has worn the style with everything from trench coats to super baggy jeans and even a flowing midi dress. The simple black sneaker makes everything from wardrobe basics to more dressed-up pieces feel a little more, for lack of a better word, cool.

So if you, like me, need a shoe that can get you through a whole calendar year, feel free to join me in grabbing Holmes’ go-to sneaker that looks good with everything you already own.
